As a schizophrenic, Alex's brain is "broken", and during this most original novel, A SELF-MADE MONSTER, Alex plans to reorganize his damaged brain with complete blood. For Alex's designated quirk - either his blessing and his curse - is that he's taking at the features of his sufferers in such a lot fantastic ways.

Alex sees the bright and socially backward scholar, Edward Head, as his savior: Edward's disciplined and strong brain is simply the tonic Alex must rejuvenate his artistic powers. yet Alex isn't the just one with hopes. The residing between him have their very own hopes. Edward¿s hopes are carnal. He wishes either Holly Dish, an amalgam of sweaty undergraduate daydreams, and Claire candy, a returning grownup coed who's either cool and mysterious. Holly and Claire too have their very own hopes, as does the quick and cynical Jimmy Stubbs, who hates to review and likes to drink beer and scheme. The hopes of every personality intersect and finally violently knot - generating a twisting climax that leaves a few characters lifeless and others approximately to appreciate an wonderful monetary windfall.

By turns violent and humorous, A SELF-MADE MONSTER is likely one of the most original vampire novels ever released. It strips away the drained clichés and red prose of the vampire tale and replaces them with dead-on characterizations, a galloping plot, and a brand new belief of the vampire itself.

The image of the vampire today, for example, with his cape and fangs, is relative to the imagery that we have been constantly exposed to, through literature and filmography, for the past two hundred years. This in turn was an evolution of the vampire reports of the academics before them, and were created with these early ideas within their subconscious thought. Bogatyrev explains that ‘psychologists have shown that everyone who describes one of his own dreams modifies it under the influence of similar dreams or phenomena he has heard.

Indeed, a possible origin of the vampire is from a folkloric rendering of the Christian Cain and Abel story. Cain killed his brother Abel and so was banished; he wandered until 46 he met Lilith, the original partner of Adam, who had left Adam and become a witch. Lilith had become a mother to demons in a bargain made with the angels. She is often depicted as killing human children and showed Cain the life power of blood. Cain is later referred to in the New Testament as being ‘the prototype of the wicked man’.

It is with Bogatyrev’s theory in mind that we must now look to folkloric stories themselves. In one story from Ion Creanga27 we hear how in Ama˘ra˘s¸ti, a rural village in central Romania, an old woman died. After several months the children of her eldest son begin to die, and then those of her youngest son. The sons go to their mother’s grave, dig up her body, cut her in half and re-bury her. Still the deaths continue. Once more they dig up her body and are horrified to find it whole again, so they take the body into the forest, where they cut out her heart and burn it, mix the ashes with water and give the liquid to their remaining children to drink.
